Reports

Report from the Chair

Brian gave the Chair’s report for the academic year 06/07. He thanked both Glenn and Phil for their hard work and dedication to the bands. He also thanked the groups for bringing enjoyment to audiences. He has had a fantastic time on the Friends committee for 7 years, with 3 years as chair.  He felt the time spent was fun and productive and never a chore.

(Report from Chair – Appendix 1)

Treasurer’s Report

Anne presented details of the current financial situation. We began the year with £775.58 in the bank and currently have £746.76. We received £300 in sales of cds and not as much in terms of donations.

Gift aid was claimed on the donations received from parents of both groups  (Treasurer’s Report – Appendix 2)

Director’s Report – Jazz Orchestra

Glenn gave a report on the activities of the Orchestra, which has proved to be another good year. He thanked Brian who was a ‘rock’ of a chair. He provided a list of concerts and felt that highlights for him were working with Dennis Rollins and Lee Gibson. He talked about forthcoming engagements. Glenn felt that there had been a good run of highly committed youngsters, but expressed concern about the commitment of a few members, he reiterated the importance of not booking holidays in term time for those who finish early after exams.

(SYJO Music Director’s Report – Appendix 3)

Director’s Report – Jazz Ensemble

Phil explained the reasons for the change of title of the group from Workshop to Ensemble. Membership is up to 32 this year. A healthy proportion of members are going to Conway.

A highlight of the year was playing at the D of E awards. The Ensemble really enjoyed playing at Southport Theatre and received a letter from the organisers, thanking them.

There is a growing confidence in improvising.

Report from the Chair – Brian Dring September 2007

As I read through last year’s report I began it with the comment that “This year’s report from me will be mercifully brief”. I then went on for a full page of A4 typing! Rest assured that this; my final report will be briefer than the last.

As ever, I will try to steal no thunder from the reports of Glenn & Phil, the musical directors. However, on behalf of the Friends Committee it would be remiss of me not to offer thanks to the young musicians in both workshop and orchestra for the enjoyment they have given to their audiences throughout the year. Where the audiences are in Sefton Music service concerts, the bands set a tremendous example to the younger beginner musicians and their parents in displaying that with hard work and dedication, an excellent standard can be achieved. I always get the feeling that the audience really looks forward to the “top of the bill” performance when either the workshop or orchestra are listed to finish the programme. When the bands have played to the more “mature audience”, such as at Melling Tithebarn and Scarisbrick Village Hall the appreciation shown by the audiences is tremendous as they really know their jazz. At all of these concerts I have heard frequent high praise for the bands of which they should be proud.

The 21st Anniversary Reunion of Sefton Youth Jazz was held last Christmas at the Royal Clifton Hotel. Such was the success of the event as a more open venue; allowing the public to sit and listen from the lounge; that we have booked The Clifton again and let’s hope that this may establish a new home for the now famous reunion gig.

Having been involved with Sefton Jazz for the last 7 years, as parent, committee member and Chair for the last 3 years, I would like to thank the directors, Glenn, Phil and formerly Tom Sykes for their hard work in rehearsing the bands and giving up so much time to help not only my kids who were involved, but the many musicians who have been part of Sefton Youth Jazz.

My time serving on the committee has always been fun, hopefully productive and never a chore. This has been helped by the great sense of purpose of the Friends committee, which does a great job in the background to support the efforts of the musical directors. It only remains for me to wish the committee, Glenn and Phil and most importantly, the musicians, the very best of luck for the future. I’m now looking forward to winning the crocheted lady toilet roll holder at the reunion raffle. There, I’ve finished and possibly a line or two less than last year.

Thank you.

Brian Dring

11 concerts including 2 Jazz Festival appearances. Although there was no NMFY entry this year it was still pretty busy. Highlights included the concert with Denis Rollins and the Jazz Idol final with Lee Gibson. We also received good reviews for the outdoor performance at the Jazz festival.

2007-8 will be exciting with all the Capital of Culture events –

Already we have some engagements that will put the band in front of new audiences. I am very pleased that the band has the chance to play at Geoff Matthew’s ‘Jazz on a Winter’s Weekend’ and that he has given us a clinic session as part of the event. There is also the beginning of an exchange with two Austrian bands. We have the opportunity to make a return visit in the summer of 2009.

Commitment

After a long run of really good commitment, there were issues with some students, particularly at the end of last season. It is really important to commit to the whole of the programme; this can mean some tough choices.
